Bled – Slovenia

One last pizza, coffee & gelato in the morning and we were on the train from Venice to Bled in Slovenia! This involved one change of trains and a bus in between to cross the border from Italy to Slovenia. Funny thing is that we, and the other tourists on the bus didn’t realize when to get off the bus and everyone ended up in the wrong spot. After a 10 minute wait the bus returned to Italy, with us jumping off along the way. The train station in Bled is about a 30 minute walk around the lake to town, lovely of course, but not so much with our heavy bags. We stayed at the Castle hostel, the highlight of which was the BBQ in the backyard that we could use. We cooked up some snags and veggies for dinner and were joined by a few other Aussies in the hostel who were doing the same. The beers soon turned into Lemoncello (from Italy) and Raki (from Montenegro). After a sleep in and cooked breakfast (on the BBQ), we set off to find the bus to Lake Bohinjsko.
This lake is quite nice and a lot less touristy than Bled. When we arrived we had a look at the church and bridge in the town. From the bridge we could see hundreds of decent size fish, probably trout. We walked along the lake, probably about halfway around.

We continued on, up into the hills to Slap Savica (slap is Slovenina for waterfall). This was a very nice waterfall that starts in a limestone cave and then drops 50m into a rock pool. After enjoying the view of the falls and two adorable ‘Lassie’ dogs for a while we headed back down for a coffee and then the bus ride back to Bled. Strangely the girls did not want sausages again, so we just had a vegetable stir-fry, cooked on the BBQ.
The next morning we were up earlier and had a quick breakfast. We hired bikes for the day and headed off around the lake with a day to explore the Bled area. Bled is a beautiful little town in the Julian Alps. We rode around Lake Bled, which has a pretty island with a church on it in the middle of the lake. About halfway around the lake we came across and old artist selling works on side of the lake. He was a bit quirky, but very friendly and we came back later in the day to buy a small painting. There was also an international rowing regatta on the lake this weekend. While we didn’t stop and watch any races it was nice looking at all the row boats on the lake as we rode.
We veered away from the lake and rode out of town and up to Vintgar Gorge. It was leisurely uphill ride, an opinion not shared by the two female cyclists! The gorge itself was beautiful, about 2km long, not too deep with many fish, rapids and waterfalls. The fast moving water was aqua crystal clear and surrounded by mossy, big boulders. After our gorge walk we had a nice lunch in a small restaurant in the valley, we shared a smoked trout salad, fried squid and pommes frites all with a nice view of the valley. The ride back down into Bled was much faster than the ride up. Next stop was the castle above Lake Bled, which had nice views of the surrounding area. The girls insisted on hot chocolates before returning their bikes, Damien went for another ride around lake and then up a dirt track looking for a view of the lake, but only managed to get lost and muddy.
Our final evening in Bled we had a BBQ, although the owner had taken the hot plate, so we had to use a make shift grill. Pork skewers and vegetables with bread, cheese and a few Pivo (beers). Shortly after dinner another storm rolled in and we had to move our party to the dorm.
